The Best Brunch in Town
The Drapers Arms
One of the best aspects to Canterbury is the culture. There are so many shops, so many wonderful little cafes and bars and lots of wonderful welcoming little eateries. Canterbury is bustling and although there has recently been a drop in shop sales due to the rise in online shopping and sadly, extortionate rent. It’s great to see that good restaurants that put their customers first are still bustling and vibrant.
One of these little places is The Drapers Arms, centrally located at the corner of Palace, Guildhall and Sun Street. The Drapers Arms is owned by the same group that in the last couple of years opened up the incredibly popular, Chapter (where you’ll find the best pizza in Canterbury). The Drapers Arms offer a fantastic menu, including a top notch vegan menu as well.
The prices are more than reasonable for the quality of food but the award for best value goes to their incredible brunch. For just £34 you can indulge in a 3-course meal with unlimited Prosecco, Bellini’s, Mimosa’s or Rum Punch and if you can’t make your mind up – you can mix and match to your hearts content (as long as you do so within your 2-hour window).
Brunches are always a win-win scenario, aren’t they? Delicious food and unlimited drinks so you and your group can let your hair down and have a catch up. I’ve been to a couple of brunches in my time and The Drapers Arms hit the nail on the head with quality. Now we all had a mix of starters that we all shared so we could all have a bite so I’ll do my best to relay them all here.
To start we had the Jackfruit Croquettes served with a Chilli Mayonnaise, a Crispy Duck Egg served with Asparagus Soldiers and Parmesan, Fried Squid with Garlic Mayonnaise and Lemon and my favourite – their House Made Ricotta served with Broad Beans, Peas, Mint on Sourdough Bread but what they don’t mention on the menu is that it comes with grated lemon zest which is an absolutely wonderful surprise – imagine a savoury cheesecake that sets your taste buds alight? Yep, this is exactly that!
The starters are delicious; great portion sizes, creative and inspiring, packed full of flavour and light to eat- exactly what you want from a brunch.
Our mains were a mix. I, of course had the Mac & Cheese with Westcombe cheddar, Kentish blue and brioche crumbs (perfection). As you may know by now, Mac and Cheese is ‘my thing’ – if it’s on the menu I can’t help but get it. There is something about the comfort of tender pasta and creamy cheese that just gets me going. Now it’s no secret but Pork and Co’s Mac & Cheese has always been my favourite but with the added touch of Kentish Blue… This Mac & Cheese is a defendant contender!
The girls were treated to Bubble & Squeak, Woodland Mushrooms, Poached Egg with a Chive Butter Sauce, Soft Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon, Chives on a Delicious Sourdough Bread and a Smashed Avocado, Lemon, Chilli Poached Eggs on Sourdough Bread.
Again, the perfect sized dishes for a brunch. In the midst of all of this, we were treated to delicious drinks that just kept on coming and the laughter just got more and more apparent as we all got a little bit tipsy on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
For pudding, we chose the Lemon Meringue Pie Tart, Vanilla Cheesecake with Roasted Strawberries and Ginger Bread Crumb and a Baked Pineapple with Coconut Ice Cream and a Rum Sauce.
The Drapers Arms is bold, creative and full of exciting ideas. It has a mixture of local quality comfort food mixed with exciting ideas that add a zest of life to a place. The service is very attentive and very friendly and it’s in a prime location.
Overall, Drapers Arms is a fab new joint that’s super for gatherings with a big group (especially if you take on their bottomless brunch deal which includes 3 courses for just £34.00).
The food here is well priced, comforting and you’ll find yourself here for a little longer than you would a usual restaurant because it’s such a fab place to people watch.
Watch out Canterbury, there’s a new place about town and it’s definitely worth a visit!
